There are many settings such as outside the house. This gives of an enigma code that the film is based around or something in that house. Most horror films which involve ghosts and spirits are usually set in a house such as Paranormal activity and Insidious. This is a stereotypical convention in the horror genre. Another setting is the kitchen, which shows there is a normal person living a normal life at this point until the mid shot shows a door moving in the background. A few other scenes are shown in the hallway area. From the long shot in the hallway, the viewer can see the stairs and the other rooms around. There is another scene in the bathroom, a girl is flossing her teeth then something terrible happens. A use of settings make the film more interesting instead of it being set in just one or two places. The settings do not stop there as there is some scenes outside the house. For example, there is a scene placed in a school next to the lockers. This is great to have. This is because the characters are seen in a school which can make the film more relatable to the audience. It may also comfort the audience a little as they are around the same age as the characters. The characters are seen in a cafe which is a normal place to go which keeps the film flowing and relatable which the audience enjoys. There are also other settings such as a tunnel which makes the film more tense, then going back to the house, there is the bedroom and dining room which makes the house seem more realistic!
There is non-diegetic music at the beginning. It is slow paced and sounds like a piano playing. The non-diegetic music then stops and sound effect start creeping in. There are sound effects such as a door slam. This is a stereotypical sound to hear in a horror film but it makes the audience jump! There are ghoul sounds such as screams and breathing. This shows there is a evil presence around. There is then video footage which keeps cutting out, this suggests to the audience something is about to happen which builds suspense. Towards the end, the sound effects such as screaming and glass breaking becomes emphasised and fast paced.
There are 8 inter titles all together. These give a little more information about the film. For example, 'This halloween'. This instantly tells the audience roughly when the film will be released. Secondly, 'From the prodcer of Insidious'. Insidious is a horror film which was made for the same audience. Therefore, if people enjoyed that film, they will most likely want to watch this film. This inter title easily persuades people this film is good due to the producers of 2 films being shown. 'Some call it a spirit board'. This is the first inter title shown which tells the audience the film is about a Ouija board or something along those lines.
